Recurring The Hague lecture and discussion series New Emergences hosts a panel discussion with festival artists AGF, Kubra Khademi and Moor Mother entitled Poetry, Presence and Empowerment.
New Emergences is an initiative that serves as a platform to openly discuss issues regarding gender equality in electronic music and sound art. Within these fields, it focuses on the presence and absence of women alongside diversity issues present in the broader spectrum of under-represented voices.
The New Emergences lecture and discussion series provides a Safe Space for professionals – and for the public – to share their experiences, tell their stories and to discuss a wide range of perspectives, opinions and theories: male and female stereotypes are questioned and strategies to achieve Change are discussed.
The New Emergences series, website and blog are set up by a group of volunteers who help organize the events. Documentation is by transcribing the lectures and discussions for archiving purposes, and to publish the summaries on the New Emergences blog, encouraging the discussion to continue online between events.
The New Emergences team has set itself the goal to raise awareness in the field. The initiative supports under-represented voices in the world of electronic music and sound art and encourages those voices to develop a language of their own, and to present themselves with confidence within a field that in 2017 is still largely dominated by their white male colleagues.
For its 7th edition – which will take place at REWIRE Festival 2017 – New Emergences extends a warm invitation to the festival artists
and Moor Mother.
These three exceptional artists will come together to discuss issues based on their embodied experience of engendering poetry with activism. How poetry can empower identity, occupying a much needed platform for under-voiced artists and disengaged communities. New Emergences are excited to discuss the potency of language and expression, the power of speaking up and making people listen, and the effects of being heard.
Everyone present in the room is invited to comment or ask questions to the panel. The moderator has the role and the right to filter and move on within the discussion if and whenever necessary.
The moderators at this event will be members of the New Emergences team: Anne Wellmer – composer and performer of electronic music; and András Simongáti-Farquhar – a researcher, sound and media artist.
