Why noise? In English, the word ‘noise’ comes with myriad connotations which all play to the plurality of lots of things happening at the same time, it makes it hard to focus. In communication, noise can distract and distort meaning which particularly in gender expression might be a useful tool and used intentionally. Noise as a sonic and visual phenomenon is deeply complex and allows its context to become the main player. One pays attention to the frame and the space where it is being produced and presented and becomes aware of ones own body. As a transgressive phenomenon, noise embodies a catharsis. It has a purifying effect, evoking a kind of trance that lets us reach out to a different level, crossing borders within oneself. As noise is sound that is pushed to its limits, it reasons that, just like challenging ‘gender limitations’, identity boundaries may become fluid.

Charles Céleste Hutchins was born in San Jose, California in 1976. Growing up in Silicon Valley, he started programming at a young age and has continued to do so, even after leaving dot coms to persue music composition – obtaining an MA form Wesleyan University in 2005 and a PhD from the University of Birmingham in 2012. His recent work has focused on gendered labour and AI. Charles will speak about the history of noise music and relate music historical aspects to issues concerning gender identities and trans people.

Joel Ryan

Joel Ryan has been performing Electro-Acoustic music since 1979 when he first hacked an Apple II for live sound processing. Convinced of the musical future for personal computers he left hacker’s paradise in Northern California to work in New York for Warner/Atari and then to Europe where he joined with George Lewis inventing and evangelize real-time digital electronic music. From IRCAM in Paris they went to Amsterdam and Michel Waisvisz’ STEIM. There and at the Institute of Sonology they seeded a tradition of performance and improvisation that is still bearing fruit.

Fani Konstantinidou

Fani Konstantinidou is a composer, sound artist, performer and music researcher based in the Netherlands.
Her music and research focuses on conceptual composition, sonic images and the perception/imagination of the listener in electroacoustic music. Currently, she is investigating how the cultural, social and individual differences of the audience affect the listening process and the educational practices of contemporary music.

Looi van Kessel

Moderator Looi van Kessel (Leiden University) is a PhD student at the Leiden University Center for Arts in Society, specializing in American literature and gender studies. He recently co-edited an issue of the Dutch Journal for Gender Studies on trans* studies and as a member of the university’s LGBT+ core advisory team he makes it one of his key points to improve gender dynamics in the classroom situation, including the attempt to make teachers more aware of trans and genderqueer expressions and identifications among their students.

The New Emergences lecture and discussion series provides a Safe Space for professionals – and for the public – to share their experiences, tell their stories and to discuss a wide range of perspectives, opinions and theories: male and female stereotypes are questioned and strategies to achieve Change are discussed.

The #11 edition of New Emergences focuses on listening rather than discussing.  However, in-between the sets we will use the opportunity to introduce the artists with short conversations.
We are pleased to announce that on Thursday 8 February, we will host performances by Strict Nurse, G.T.Thomas, and SoundEscape.

The artists, invite us to dive into three very different sonic (and visual) worlds, reaching from playfully looping gardens via immersive walls of noise to whispering electronic environments. A small step into unknown territory lets us sink into a sea of delicious underwater worlds that are glowing in the dark. Come with us…. take the plunge!

Strict Nurse is the alter ego of Leilani Trowell. Raised in a strict household in the USA with dreams of becoming a pop star, now residing wildly in the low-lying lands, Strict Nurse improvises with layered cassette loops, samples, synthesizers and a sweet, sinister voice to cast a spellbinding soundscape. Modalities of healing, perversion, power dynamics and personal intuition are the current themes in her work.

G.T. Thomas has a B.A. Music Theory and Composition (2004), held two “Composer in Residence” positions before the age of 22, and carried out an apprenticeship in composing, songwriting, orchestration, and producing under master film score composer Chris Dedrick (2007 – 2010).
Since 2009, from her studio in Amsterdam, Thomas writes and records original songs, most commonly performing them live using her voice and bass guitar. She also scores and fully produces music and soundscapes, combining orchestral/ symphonic influences from classic Hollywood, with thick choral harmonies, and electronic elements.
But whether in her songs, commercial work, or her pieces that have been heard in modern art museums around the world, beneath the surface of this more-or-less mainstream palette, there’s a minimalist tendency in Thomas’ approach, fueled by her fascination with what could be called “meter preserving poly-phrases” or “phrase phasing.” She is currently developing work for her synthesizer system, where sequencers assist her in further exploring the phase-like impact of phrases of overlapping varying lengths as they go through modulations and tempo changes.

    [Gerda Geertens: composition, computer animation – Martine Von Gleich: violin improvisation]

Since 2016, Gerda Geertens and violinist Martine von Gleich work together as musical collective soundEscape to perform electronic compositions and computer animations with live improvisation.
The intense, colorful instrumental violin sound of Martine von Gleich fits in seamlessly to the mixed media works of computer manipulated images and sounds by Gerda Geertens.
The music of Gerda Geertens originates from the repetition of small particles of sampled sounds. By means of frequency differences each sampled piece of sound gets its own character.  Layering repeated sounds with different frequencies and velocities relative to each other result in rhythmic structures and musical form.

Geertens’ computer animation is mostly built on still images and video material zoomed in to different sizes. These differently sized images are copied and stacked in transparent layers that move relative to each other and result in perpetually changing structures.
In this way the mixed media works of Gerda Geertens are built on repetition of elements in a context of continuously changing relations. But this is not only a matter of technique made possible by the use of the computer.  This way of manipulating image and sound is as well an expression of a vision on life in general. The expression of reality as a continuous struggle with the paradox of life. Repetition and change. The perception of a (relatively) unchanging recognizable individuality in relation to an ever changing context of possibilities. And the struggle not to give in to a wish or even an attempt to overcome one at the cost of the other; not to get stuck in an illusion that hides this paradox of life from consciousness.

This time New Emergences will present short discussions as part of a live event in WORM, Rotterdam. Algo-Rhythms will be an evening of live coding performances by Marije Baalman, Joanne Armitage & the OFFAL and Joana Chicau.

The event is dedicated to the act of coding as a live artistic intervention; from digital to physical expressions, a myriad of experiments relating code to sound, code to the body, body to movement, counter-movements, and more.

Our talks will focus on the issue of gender diversity in the electronic music scene. Is the live-coding community inclusive enough? Is the open source movement open for everyone? We’ll ask the artists how things work in their own practice and what their personal experiences have been.

OFFAL

OFFAL (Orchestra For Females And Laptops) is an international collective who devise performances involving multi-location collaborative improvisation. The group was formed in 2015 in response to research around gender in digital technology and laptop ensemble practice . As a non- hierarchical collective it aims to connect an international group of women engaged in electronic music by developing technological systems and organisational structures that facilitate collaboration. The group provides a platform for the creation and performance of new laptop music by women.

Joanne Armitage is a creative technologist and artist working with sound, physical computing, digital media and interaction design. Her current practice-based research explores how digital sound can connect with the body through haptic feedback. Joanne is active as a live coder, performing internationally solo, as part of duo ALGOBABEZ and international collective OFFAL.

Wezen – Marije Baalman

Wezen – Gewording by Marije Baalman, a performance combining live-coding and gestural control; switching between performance modes of body and gestures and live-coding their relationship to sounds. The work is an ongoing exploration of mappings of body gestures onto sound and light, and has been changing over the past one and a half year from performance to performance.

Marije Baalman is an artist and researcher/developer working in the field of interactive sound art based in Amsterdam. She has a diverse background in physics, sound and sensor technologies, and has worked in the field of interactive sound art, making installations and performances (dance/music).
In her artistic work she is interested in the realtime components of the work, in that nothing is precomposed as such, but rather the sonic or light output depends on realtime interactions, be it of the performer or of the audience. She is a member of the Instrument Inventors Initiative (iii) in The Hague.

All Nerves Universe – Joana Chicau

< all_nerves_on_the_universe.html >  is a performance presenting a series of coding experiments with web environments, navigation technologies and the body in motion. It uses techniques such as motion tracking, geocoding, javascript operations in the web browser and online maps. On the body movement part, it privileges the micro, slow, occasionally spasmodic, kinetic activators of duration or perhaps a non measurable temporality. Altogether this piece aims at projecting new (dis)orientations, fusing physical and virtual dimensions of space, expanding peripheries, borders, inner, outer, skin. Opening up space for other relations between bodies, trajectories and contexts. A semi-improvised performance that interweaves live coding with speculative body-terrain topographies — forming a new network of nerves.

Joana Chicau is a media designer, researcher and performer – with a background in classical & contemporary dance – currently based in The Netherlands. She runs a transdisciplinary research project which interweaves media design and web environments with performance and choreographic practices. Chicau has been actively participating in debates and performative international events; and the project has been growing into diverse formats.
